The Corolla and the Civic have been battling head to head since the 1970s, and it is usually a pretty close fight. Both cars feature a standard fuel sipping 4-cylinder motor, and 6-speed manual transmission in the base models. But Toyota sells their base cars for a lot less, more than $1500 less. Choose the automatic transmission version of either car and the price goes up, but Corolla is still about $1,000 less.
Driving a fuel efficient sedan doesn’t have to be boring, not with the sporty Corolla SE and it’s rival, the Civic Si, sports sedans. The Corolla SE though doesn’t lessen the basic goodness of the car; it still gets great mileage, has a comfortable ride, and features an automatic transmission (with sport mode and paddle shifting). The Honda Civic Si is a much more focused, racer-style sedan, with stiff ride, thirstier motor, and no other transmission but a manual 6 speed..
These cars both got new sheet metal and chassis revisions recently, but Toyota put a greater effort into making a roomy back seat. The 2016 Corolla has more rear legroom to the tune of more than 4”. Honda made the Civic slightly longer and wider with this design, but Toyota still has more interior space. Add it all up and you get several cubic feet of extra space inside the Corolla, from a car that is basically the same size on the outside.
